What about being a regional pilot?
Q. I saw the recent question on becoming a 747 pilot. Frankly, I don't like that sound of driving something THAT immense; it takes a lot of time to do too. Also, the hassle associated with entering another country and their regulations and the long flight time. Now what I am asking is this: What are the requirements of being a regional pilot flying 737ish aircraft in regional airlines like Southwest etc? I am really considering a job in travel and a pilot sounds good. Hows the training? How long? Is it worth it? What about your family life? I would appreciate answers from regional pilots or international alike, although anyone's helpful input would also help.

Make no mistake, they are a MAJOR U.S. carrier and one of the top paying airlines at that. Any airline that flies 737s can't really be considered a "regional". In all actuality many airlines that are called such are actually majors as they have over a billion in revenue annually (the mark of a major by the D.O.T.). The "regional" airlines like the Express & Connection carriers that feed the majors (even if they are now "majors" in their own right) generally all require: 1. A Commercial pilot certificate with instrument & multi-engine ratings 2. 1,000 hours of flight experience, 100 of… [cont.]

How do they deliver regional jets to customers?
Q. I've always wondered how they deliver regional jets to customers. Say some airline in Asia orders 20 CRJ-200s from Bombardier, which manufactures aircraft in North America. How do they deliver it to Asia? Regional-jets lack trans-oceanic range. I've heard of 717s being delivered to Hawaii by installing additional fuel tanks in the cabin, but then how do they get them across the Pacific? Ships?

Is Associates in Aviation enough to get a job in Regional Airlines?
Q. I believe most of them do not require pilots to have any degree. Can I get Associates in Aviation and all the Pilot Ratings from Single to Multi Engine-instructor. Would that be enough to get a job in regional airlines? If I have Associates degree and more hours of flying, do I get hired first in comparison of the one who has bachelor but less hours than me?

A. This is what they look for in the interview How many flying hours does this person have? What aircraft have they flown? How does their personality fit in with our airline? Having a degree is a bonus but it won't get you the job. There is a pilot shortage in the world at the moment so you have a good chance of getting a job without a degree but if have the time to get one. Go ahead and do it incase your aviation career falls apart you will have something else to fall back on!
