In common usage, existence is the world we are aware of through our senses, and that persists independently without them. In academic philosophy the word has a more specialized meaning, being contrasted with essence, which specifies different forms of existence as well as different identity conditions for objects and properties. Philosophers investigate questions such as "What exists?" "How do we know?" "To what extent are the senses a reliable guide to existence?" "What is the meaning, if any, of assertions of the existence of categories, ideas, and abstractions?"

Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, existence or reality in general, as well as of the basic categories of being and their relations. Traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics, ontology deals with questions concerning what entities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences.

Epistemology studies criteria of truth, defining "primary truths" inherently accepted in the investigation of knowledge. The first is existence. It is inherent in every analysis. Its self-evident, a priori nature cannot be consistently doubted, since a person objecting to existence according to some standard of proof must implicitly accept the standard's existence as a premise.

Materialism holds that the only thing that exists is matter, that all things are composed of material, and all phenomena (including consciousness) are the result of material interactions. In other words, matter is the only substance. Supernaturalism, on the other hand, holds that other things exist (or may exist) in addition.

Life is a characteristic that distinguishes objects that have self-sustaining biological processes that exist from those that do not —either because such functions have ceased (death), or else because they lack such functions and are classified as "inanimate".

How do existentialists justify the belief that free will even exists?
Q. Philosophers like Sartre use human freedom as the fundamental basis for their ideas. But how do we know that it even exists? How do we know that actions are not merely the results of causes? Furthermore, how do they deal with developments in cognitive science that question the existence of a Self that is in full control of one's thoughts and actions? I am inquiring about the existentialist position, rather than the question of free will in general.

A. In my view, it is more probable that our free will is merely an illusion to gratify our ego and is only an unexplored part of the grand system of cause and effect that is ruling this Universe... we may be feeling the existence of free will only because of either our blind faith in God or due to our bloated ego... that there is such an inviolable state of uncertainty all over, is another fact that negates any existence of free will. I think it may be the same story as miracle, where just because we can not establish any acceptable cause and effect relationship, we claim that miracles can happen. Miracles as well as freewill may merely be our ignorant or arrogant beliefs devoid of reality. I would really be shocked if ever they are proved… [cont.]

What kind of partnership exists between Apple and Starbucks?
Q. What kind of partnership exists between Apple and Starbucks? Do I need an iphone or itouch, or can i use itunes on my laptop? Is this free, or is it the same cost as downloading a regular song with itunes? If it is free, how does it benefit these companies? What are they using as far as technology to give us this service? Thank you

A. Apple recently closed a deal with Starbucks (behind closed doors) giving it eleven percent of its net profit each quarter. This is why so many people use Macintosh computers while sipping delicious Starbucks lattes. You can use iTunes on your laptop, but I suggest purchasing an iPhone to make it more convenient. Some have said that iTunes streaming through iTouches is glitching. My dad is southern regional manager of Starbucks - that's how I know.
