Closed adoption (also called "confidential" adoption and sometimes "secret" adoption) is the process by where an infant is adopted by another family, and the record of the biological parent(s) is kept sealed. (Often, the biological father is not recorded—even on the original birth certificate.) An adoption of an older child who already knows his or her biological parent(s) cannot be made closed or secret. This formerly was the most traditional and popular type of adoption, peaking in the decades of the post-World War II Baby Scoop Era. It still exists today, but it exists alongside the practice of open adoption. The sealed records effectively prevent the adoptee and the biological parents from finding, or even knowing anything about each other (especially in the days before the internet). However, the emergence of non-profit organizations and private companies to assist individuals with their sealed records has been effective in helping people who want to connect with biological relatives to do so.

From reading some of the responses on the adoption thread about open/closed adoption?
Q. l've been reading a lot of mixed messages about whether or not adopted children feel 'good' about being adopted or not. Some have said they appreciated their parent's honesty, and others have said heartbreaking things about searching out their birthparents only to be rejected. All parents rights and feelings aside, do you feel it it more beneficial to inform children about their adoption and birthparents, or not?

A. I have always been of the belief that telling a child as early as possible is best. Why?---because it becomes the 'norm' for them, is less stressful when they tell someone else or someone asks, etc. I have ALWAYS known. I have always been comfortable knowing. It changes nothing about me at all. I have all the information available to me about the circumstances behind my adoption.

What is the difference between an open and closed adoption if grandparents adopt a child?
Q. if the grandparents adopt their grandchild and the parents insist in staying in the child's life what is the difference? (no there is no drugs involved btw...the child was taken away due to mental illness)

A. If the parents are still in the life of the child then it is an open adoption. Closed adoptions are where the adoptive family and biological families have no contact and share no information. Many times the two will never meet and have no knowledge of anything about the other. In an open adoption, there is contact between the adoptive and biological families. They hopefully share information, pictures, and even visits. I would think (and I say this is only my opinion) but any adoption by a grandparent would have to be an open adoption.

Have any of you that were in a closed adoption, met your biological parents?
Q. Was it awkward? How is your relationship with your adoptive parents after it? I was just wondering because I'm deciding whether to seek out my birth mother.

A. I was in a closed adoption and reunited with my natural mother at the age of 32 and my father at age 33. It was not awkward in the least -- it was so comfortable and natural. My mom and I hit it off instantly. She is so much more like a "mom" to me than the a-mother that raised me. My relationship with my natural father is a little less close, but still we are much more similar than not, and I am closer to him than anyone in my adoptive family (except my younger, also-adopted sister). He and I share many traits and we also share the pain of having no choice. My relationship with my a-parents is similar after my reunion to what it was before. The main difference is that I no longer allow them to perpetuate the lies that the agency… [cont.]
